Commemorating 110 Years – Withdrawal from Gallipoli

 

The Governor-General, as Commander-in-Chief and guest of Friends of Gallipoli attended the 110th anniversary of the withdrawal from Gallipoli at the ANZAC memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney. A separate, but related service was also held at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, attended by the Governor of Victoria.

Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, attended a commemorative service at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney, on December 20, 2025, to mark the 110th anniversary of the withdrawal of the last Anzac troops from Gallipoli.

The highly successful and stealthy evacuation of approximately 90,000 Allied troops from the Anzac and Suvla Bay areas took place between December 8 and 20, 1915, saving countless lives after months of fierce fighting and immense loss

In her remarks, the Governor-General, as Commander-in-Chief, reflected on the Anzac legacy and the importance of remembering their sacrifice to inspire future acts of “care, kindness and respect”. Guests released stars inscribed with the names of the fallen into the memorial’s Well of Contemplation.
