Peace at Gallipoli – A Day of Reflection and Unity

On 20 December 2024, we at Friends of Gallipoli Inc. were proud to host the 12th annual “Peace at Gallipoli” Remembrance Ceremony at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance. This solemn occasion marks the silent withdrawal of the ANZAC troops from Gallipoli in the early hours of 20 December 1915—a moment that signalled the end of fighting in the ANZAC sector and the beginning of peace.

Together with distinguished guests, including Mr Michael Bennett, grandson of General Sir John Monash, and the Turkish Consul General Mr Doğan Işık, we gathered to honour all who fell—Australians, Turks, New Zealanders, and others. Wreaths were laid with reverence, anthems sung with pride, and Atatürk’s powerful words of reconciliation were reflected upon with deep emotion.

Our ceremony is not a celebration of war, but a reaffirmation of peace and mutual respect—values that underpin our mission. Gallipoli represents a unique bond forged through hardship. Each year, we honour not just the memory of the fallen, but the friendship between our nations that has flourished in its wake.

As we stood beneath three flags, we remembered the past—and recommitted to a future built on peace.

Lest we forget.
